Fall 2026 the three of us, Denise, Hugh and Remy, took a month long trip to explore the Utah Outback. It mostly centered on the San Rafael Swell, both north and south sections. Locations included Nine Mile Canyon, The Wedge, Buckhorn Wash, Black Dragon Canyon, Red's Canyon and Cottonwood Canyon along with many side trips. It was a great trip but fell way short of "covering" Utah's Outback.
We attempted to boondock where we could with two days at an RV Park each week for supplies, showers, dumping tanks, washing clothes, etc. We were reasonably successful if you count Dispersed Sites as boondocking.
For this trip Waldo tagged along. So, atleast for this trip, we know where Waldo is. For those of you not in the know, Waldo is a 1995 Suzuki Sidekick. He's a very small quite capable 4x4. He came to us with a lift and large tires. He also came to us with a whole list of problems the cost of which exceeded our initial purchase price. It was fifty/fifty whether to fix him or look for another TracKick. But he's so cute and purple. Cute and purple won over common sense and we had him fixed-up. Hugh installed the needed equipment for towing. It's up in the air whether Waldo will come with us often or seldom. Towing him makes Ziggy harder to drive. We may try a few tricks for better towing, but if we can't he'll come only when off road exploration is the focus. Although, Waldo is now Hugh's daily driver so good good good.
For the journal the trip is broken into several smaller write-ups:
The trip overall was very dusty. On the unpaved roads we found dust infiltrated Ziggy's back door good, and the wind brought dust in to every corner. Waldo received the worst though, he got all the dust Ziggy kicked up.
So all in all a great trip, do it again in a second. But there are so many trips out there, what to choose next?
till next time - Safe Travels.
