We headed out on this adventure just after Memorial Day 2026. The first leg was from home, Prescott Valley, to Bonito CG just north of Flagstaff some 100 miles up I17. A good first day. We only stayed overnight but should have stayed two. Two nights allows for decompression after the hectic packing spree leading up to departure. Anyway, we've been to Bonito many times, it's a small NF campground in the trees. We did foolishly drive off leaving our steps behind. Total bummer there. The San Francisco Peaks had some snow even in the continuing drought.

The next jump brought us to Sand Island CG, near Bluff, another 200 miles down the road. Just stumbled onto this BLM CG on the San Juan River, a launch for rafters and a nice camp. We understand this is now part of Bear's Ears NM. On the edge of the campground there are a large number of pretroglyphs. These range from around 500BC to 1200AD, Basketmaker through Puebloan III (Anasazi). The last picture shows some newer 'glyphs over older ones, one a riden horse with reins. That one may be even newer, as in graffiti, but we don't know.

We stayed two nights at Sand Island which we found to be near the south end of Comb Ridge. Comb Ridge is a very spectacular "monocline" (sharp jagged ridge) some 80 miles long. Reported to be great camping and hiking along both sides, Butler and Comb Washes. It's another place we'd like to explore. With only one day we poked at the southern end of Butler Wash and did two hikes. The first was to the Wolfman Panel, petroglyph near Butler Wash itself. They say these date between 1500BC and 700AD, Basketmaker era.

The second hike of the day was to the Procession Panel. Did not check the desctiption of the hike well enough. Turns out this Panel is on the very top of Comb Ridge. Almost killed Hugh. Here's pictures looking east and west.

The Procession Panel dates between 700AD and 1000AD. It certainly tells a story if we could only read it.

That was exciting, but on to Green River for one night (150mi) where we got showers and stocked up on food. Stayed at the Green River State Park right in Green River, nice and shady with grass. No hookups but there is water and a dump station in the campground. Then on to Nine Mile Canyon Ranch (80 miles).

Not much wildlife on this stretch. Just this lizard and Remy, with boots on, in the back seat of Waldo.
