Travels with Ziggy

Mogollon Rim - July 2025

Our first trip with Ziggy, of more than a few days, was an exploration of the Mogollon Rim. It's a geological rim that extends most of the way across Arizona. It's close as we're in Prescott Valley about 100 miles south. We used the Mogollon Rim Discovery Trail from Overland Trail Guides for most of this trip. It started in Show Low, AZ and went west to Hwy 87 a little north east of Strawberry.

The route was all nice dirt/gravel roads. One goal with Ziggy is to get further off the beaten path than we could with Sassy. We made the voyage in July 2025 and it took up us about a week including travel to/from Prescott.

We spent the first night at Fool Hollow, an Arizona State Park. After driving from Prescott we figured we'd stay here to get an early start on the real trip. We've stayed at Fool Hollow before and it is a nice park. Nice sites with some hook-ups.

But the goal was to get off pavement and see how Ziggy did there. So early (for us) the next morning we headed out on FR-300. Pretty much the whole trip was on FR-300 which travels along the top of the Mogollon Rim. But, if the road is back 1/4 mile from the Rim most of the views are lost. That summarizes the first day, traveling along a ways from the Rim with nice forest but no views. We didn't stop and hike or drive to find overlooks though. The road for the day was dirt, or more desciptively rock. Rocks imbeded in the road surface much like cobblestones. This wasn't as bad as washboard roads can be but far from a smooth ride. We decided the scenery wasn't worth the rough ride and wouldn't do the eastern section again. No technical driving but Ziggy did very well. We did find that "airing down" our tires for gravel/dirt roads is well worth the effort.

The first night on FR-300 we stopped some 25 miles along the Rim. There was a nice large and flat boon-docking area. Some wild horses wandered by near camp leading to a very quiet peaceful night.

The scenery picked up the second day. It wasn't spectacular but much better than the first day. At least we could look over the Rim. On this western end, FR-300 travels right along the edge of the Rim giving great views.

Towards the end of FR-300 it moves north away from the Rim. Here we found a side road with a nice boon-docking site. Not as large or flat as the first night but secluded.

We spent two nights at our second camp, just nice to be alone and not moving. This was a weekend but had very little traffic (maybe 5 vehicles in two days). We were on the highway for a short period the second day and it was crazy busy. Nice just to rest, read and take walks.

Then back to Prescott with a stop at Zane Grey CG to empty and clean out our tanks. All in all a successful first "longer" trip with Ziggy. He did very well but we came back with a list of minor modifications before the next trip.

Now to prep for the next longer trip. But where's Waldo?
